The Story of MMXX
We’re living the most surreal, creepy and tragic years of modern era history.
This album tries to translate in words and music the sensations, the emotions and our sense of loss of these strange days. MMXX is the latin notation for 2020, the year that changed our lives forever. MMXXII stands for 2022, and our sense of loss gets worse and worse.
MMXX was recorded in two years. It was a great challenge because of its structure and its complex arrangement including a rock band and a choir, merging several styles together.
Part 1
Time modulates events,
it sighs tears from lost days.
Time regulates all needs.
Time moves dreams,
it stagnates on islands in eternal seas. Events modulate time,
they sigh smiles of cloudless days.
Then they slip on the rivers,
dampening colours, memories and lights.
Part 2
Fear has the colour of a distorted dawn on the moist soil in March.
Silence surrounds all the streets and the squares with its last cynical embrace. You’re hiding your hands from me, you can’t avoid my glance.
I’m hiding my hands from you, I can’t explain evil.
Part 3, Part 4
I, fragile city,
lost and ageless chrysalis,
I’m alone with my vanity without any reality, prisoner of what it will be...
I’m sleepless in this endless night,
waiting my life to come back,
but it doesn’t exist anymore.
No, no! Tell me why, tell me why
silently everything is collapsing all around me!
I’m queen, I’m slave of this time without a king. Tomorrow is just a broken sentence.
No! no, nobody’s knocking on my door!
A veil is slipping on my mouth, nothing really matters. Because it’s just a suspended time,
just a sad and long waiting
for the big desert to bloom.
Cries, a heartless dark siren cries through the silence, it shines, blinds and goes away,
it brutally pierces the womb of my city.
Tell me why, tell me why
everything is silently collapsing all around me! I sit alone in my room,
surprised that hope means distance from you, my faraway love, please hold tight my hand. Because it’s just a suspended time,
just a sad and long waiting for the big desert to bloom.
Part 5
You couldn’t argue about the freedom of men until this other day.
You can’t argue about the freedom of men even if it’s arguable. You can’t argue about the freedom of men even if it’s arguable. I will renounce the freedom of men just for a few days.
Just for a few days, for the sake of all my city!
Free us, my Lord, free us from this captivity!
We must keep on suffering just for a few days, These few days are just becoming too many.
Part 6/7/8
It’s a trickerish calm, just a fleeting light that suddenly goes out, it’s a candle dying in a gust of wind.
You, slow time will end!
But you’ll leave a dark coating on us forever.
Sad sun.
And our lives fade out,
You give us just loneliness, boredom and pain! Slow time, my fierce enemy,
you are puking your rage and you won’t stop.
Even the darkest night will end.
The freedomless pain won’t win!
When are you falling apart, you have to repeat again. The freedomless pain won’t win!
Part 9
Another day begins like the day before and it ends like the day before it...
I can’t see the sky above my purple ceiling, while I’m sinking in my swallowing sofa.
While I’m surfing on my morning coffee,
I’ve got shining eyes and a damned lump in my throat, I can see sad and lonely people on a screen,
they pretend to dance like they did before.
Everything begins, evolves and ends,
everything runs its way in its time, we’re waiting...
Even the world is slowly fading to grey
and one day it will come to an end, we’re waiting...
Even the sun is slowly running out of energy,
it will cry out its rage and it will become a black hole, we’re waiting... All the galaxies will come to an end one by one,
they will collapse in huge masses of matter, we’re waiting...
Only Time rules eternal on our lives,
it’s converting matter into energy.
Fly, my free soul and revive the zeitgeist.

The ifsounds project brings together the talents of a group of musicians, all very different from each other, whose idea is
to create a sound that is able to express an emotion, to describe a state of mind, to recount a story, to make a journey into the realms of inner consciousness....more
Ukrainian musician/composer/producer Antony Kalugin is amazingly prolific. Amongs all his other projects this was already the 13th Karfagen album (released in early 2022). Of course, a new one is ready to see the light of day in early 2023 ;-)
This album is (as all his stuff) clearly 70s oriented, "golden-era prog", extremely rich in melodies and arrangement ideas. Some jazzy, folky, classical influences included and very well sounding, too :-)
Almost disappeared in the deep wishlist 8-o
